Aid for translation and publication in foreign languages of literary or scientific works by Spanish authors

CATALONIA & THE BALEARIC ISLANDS · THE RAMON LLULL INSTITUTE (IRL)

The Ramon Llull Institute (IRL) awards translation subsidies that may be applied for by publishers planning to have original literary works written in Catalan translated into other languages during the award-year concerned, or by publishers who have acquired the relevant publishing rights for such works.

The Institut Ramon Llull (IRL) is a consortium created by the governments of Catalonia and of the Balearic Islands, with the collaboration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Spanish Government. Its aim, as established in its statutes, is "the external promotion of Catalan language and the culture expressed therein, especially literature, in all its forms, subjects and means of expression and its learning outside the linguistic area, respecting the contributions of all the lands which share it".

GERMANY · GOETHE-INSTITUT INTER NATIONES

The Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes translation programme supports the translation of books by German authors into another language. Requests for subsidies by foreign publishers may be made for books from the areas of fiction and poetry, science, non-fiction and books for younger readers. If a book has already been printed or is already on the market, promotion is no longer possible.

Translation promotion serves cultural policy aims. An independent selection committee decides three times a year on requests which have been received.

AUSTRIA · FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR TRANSLATIONS

Applications may be submitted for the translation of poetry, prose, drama and essays.

Grants are available to publishers for the translation of literary texts by contemporary Austrian authors up to a maximum of AS 30,000 per work.

SWITZERLAND · PRO HELVETIA

Grants are available to publishers for the translation of publications in the field of fiction or non-fiction, which are the work of Swiss authors; publications on Swiss cultural subjects. Applications should be accompanied by a copy of the original text and of the translation, a detailed statement of costs, copies of the licensing contract and the agreement between the publisher and translator. The quality of the translation is taken into account when assessing the application for funding. Grants are disbursed only after specimen copies of the printed book have been supplied.

ITALY · ITALIAN GOVERNMENT TRANSLATION GRANTS AND PRIZES

In order to encourage the circulation of Italian works abroad, Italian government Prizes and Grants are awarded for the publication of Italian books, the translation of literary and scientific works, and the production, dubbing and subtitling of shorts, feature films and television series for the media.

ITALY · THE EUROPEAN SECRETARIAT FOR SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS

The European Secretariat for Scientific Publications · SEPS is a non-profit association founded by universities and European cultural institutions.

SEPS collaborates with universities, publishing houses and authors by promoting and financially supporting translations of non-fiction and scientific works from Italian into other languages and vice-versa, to achieve a wide distribution of scientific culture in the European and Mediterranean countries. SEPS also supports translations of works in audiovisual material, CD-Rom and Internet.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION · EUROPE & CULTURE · BOOKS

In 1995, the European Union established the first programme to support books, reading and translation: Ariane. The Culture 2000 programme, which replaces Ariane and other programmes, devotes 11of its appropriations to funding the translation of European literary works (theatre, poetry, novels), promoting literature and reading, training professionals (translators, librarians, editors) and giving access to literature. Examples of Culture 2000 financing include meetings between writers and readers, festivals of tales or poetry, European networks of dramatists and websites providing information on literature.

THE NETHERLANDS · FOUNDATION FOR PRODUCTION AND TRANSLATION OF DUTCH LITERATURE

The Foundation for the Production and Translation of Dutch Literature exists to promote interest in Dutch-language literature abroad.

Foreign publishers wishing to publish translations of Dutch or Frisian literature, including children's literature, quality non-fiction and poetry, may apply for a subsidy towards the translation costs.

DENMARK · THE DANISH LITERATURE CENTRE

The Danish Literature Centre grants to foreign publishers support for the translation of Danish literature and Danish non-fiction works of general cultural interest.

NORWAY · NORLA - NORWEGIAN LITERATURE ABROAD (for fiction)

NORLA - Norwegian Literature Abroad is a government-funded, non-commercial foundation which provides information on Norwegian literature and Norwegian authors of fiction.

NORWAY · MUNIN - MARKETING UNIT FOR NORWEGIAN INTERNATIONAL NON-FICTION

MUNIN - Marketing Unit for Norwegian International Non-fiction provides support to publishing houses outside the Nordic countries that publish Norwegian non-fiction in translation. Support is provided for all types of non-fiction and textbooks at all educational levels, as well as for documentary material, collections of essays and biographies.

SWEDEN · SVENSKA INSTITUTET - THE SWEDISH INSTITUTE (SI)

The Svenska Insititutet - The Swedish Institute (SI) promotes the wider circulation of Swedish quality fiction by providing financial support for translations from Swedish. Foreign publishers outside the Nordic countries are invited to apply for grants covering translation costs. The grant will partly or totally cover the translator's fees in accordance with standard practice in the country concerned.

FINLAND · SUOMEN KIRJALLISUUDEN TIEDOTUSKESKUS · THE FINNISH LITERATURE CENTRE (FILI)

The Finnish Literature Information Centre (FILI), promotes knowledge of Finnish literature throughout the world and supports the translation of Finnish, Finland-Swedish and Sámi literature.

POLAND · ©POLAND - TRANSLATION PROGRAM

©Poland - Translation Program (formerly: Polish Literature Found) was founded by the Minister of Culture and is managed by the Foundation for International Initiatives - Literary Group for the promotion of Polish literature abroad - in order to provide financial support for translations of Polish literature.

HUNGARY · HUNGARIAN BOOK FOUNDATION

Hungarian Book Foundation gives financial support to foreign publishers for translations of Hungarian literary works, from 60 up to 100 (depending on to the decision of the jury) of the whole translation costs, after publication.

CZECH REPUBLIC · THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE

The Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic provides support for translations of Czech fiction. All types of prose and poetry, including books for children are eligible for support (excluding drama). Priority is given to contemporary works. Grants cover cost of translation and are given to foreign publishers (i.e. those located outside the Czech Republic).

SLOVAK REPUBLIC · LITERARNE INFORMACNE CENTRUM

Literarne Informacne Centrum (LIC - Centre for Information on Literature) was created by the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic with the aim of providing material and organisational support for literature written in Slovakia, its authors and translators.

SLOVENIA · THE TRUBAR FUND

The Trubar Fond is an informal co-ordinating body between the Slovene Writers' Association, Slovene PEN and the Vladimir Bartol Fund. The necessary financial means for its activities were provided by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia. The Fund promotes the translation of Slovene literature into foreign languages; in order to achieve this goal it responds to the written applications of foreign publishers willing to publish Slovene authors in their native languages and contributes up to 50of all publishing costs.

CANADA · THE CANADA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS

The Canada Council for the Arts, in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, provides assistance to foreign publishers for the translation of literary works by Canadian authors, into languages other than French or English, for publication abroad.

KOREA · THE KOREAN CULTURE AND ARTS FOUNDATION (KCAF)

The Korean Culture and Arts Foundation (KCAF) is a government-sponsored non-profit organization founded in March 1973 in accordance with the Culture and Arts Promotion Act.

JAPAN · THE JAPAN FOUNDATION

The principal aim of the Japan Foundation's PUBLICATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM is to provide financial assistance for the publishing of books in languages other than Japanese in order to promote a deeper understanding of Japan and Japanese culture abroad.

JAPAN · ASSOCIATION FOR 100 JAPANESE BOOKS

The goal of the Association for 100 Japanese Books is to encourage the publication of Japanese works in non-Japanese languages by providing financial assistance to their translators and publishers. Such works may include fiction, non-fiction, literature, academic titles (with the exception of natural science), etc. The idea is for each contributing member to assist in the translation of one individual work into one or more non-Japanese languages and its subsequent publication in those languages, mainly but not only through subsidizing translators. The aim throughout will be to promote better understanding of Japan abroad through increased dissemination of various aspects of Japanese culture.
